Success Story – Muriel Arnal of One Voice

Muriel Arnal is the founder and president of One Voice, a French association that advocates for animal rights, human rights, environmental law and the respect for all forms of life. One Voice is one of ACTAsia’s most highly valued supporters and collaborators.

“The struggle for animal rights is a non-violent war, but it is indeed a war,” said Muriel Arnal, founder and president of One Voice.

One Voice is the leading French organisation campaigning for animals and the living world. Fighting for all living beings, this NGO aims to eliminate all forms of cruelty. One Voice fights for the acknowledgement of animal sentience and the recognition of the link between violence to humans and violence to animals.

“Since the beginning, the heart of our vision has been that all fights for animals, nature, the planet and humans are interconnected.”

Championing change in Europe

Ms. Arnal is an animal rights powerhouse both in France and internationally. Her commitment to animal protection began in her childhood, where she was deeply affected by the suffering of animals in circus menageries. Upon a devastating encounter with an elephant in a circus when she was 10 years old, Ms. Arnal knew she wanted to dedicate her work to halting the exploitation and captivity of wild animals.

Ms. Arnal founded One Voice in 1995 after finishing her studies in the United States and returning to France. “When I started One Voice, there were no NGOs in France that were campaigning,” she shared, “since I had studied in the United States and worked in the United Kingdom, I knew that campaigns were the way forward for animals.”

One Voice operates globally to put an end to animal suffering. The organisation inspires support and action through groundbreaking investigations and impactful reports. Their comprehensive animal rights agenda includes campaigns against animal experiments and the breeding and slaughter of animals for meat, dairy, leather, and fur. They fight to end the suffering of animals held in captivity in circuses and aquariums, as well as the unjust hunting of wild animals.

One Voice is made up of 15 staff and almost 2000 volunteers. “We have always been a team,” said Ms. Arnal. “What we are dealing with, all of the animal suffering, is incredibly hard. We have to share this and support one another.”

“It is important to work as a team because the planet is part of our team as well.”

Collaboration and support for a compassionate future

One Voice is committed to helping other fights across the globe. “It is also important to work together, because [animal, environmental and social justice] has no boundaries,” said Ms. Arnal. “It is important that every group, every NGO knows that they are not alone.”

ACTAsia and One Voice have been working together for years. Our Fur Free China campaign was launched over ten years ago in partnership with One Voice and continues to grow in scope and impact. By revealing the realities of the fur industry as well as more sustainable and ethical routes, ACTAsia’s Fur Free Life project enables consumers and professionals to make informed choices about fashion. We are so proud to have recently hosted our milestone 10th International sustainable Fur Free Fashion Festival!

One Voice is also a major supporter of ACTAsia’s Caring for Life (CFL) Education for Children programme. ‘The way ACTAsia approaches education in China tackles the root of the problem,’ said Ms. Arnal. ‘The results will not come rapidly. It takes many years of work before the seeds can grow into trees with fruit. But that is the purpose. When the seeds grow, the result is immense.’

Caring for Life

ACTAsia’s (CFL) Education for Children program aims to foster empathy and accountability towards animals, the environment, and others among children throughout Asia. This exceptional six-year curriculum aligns with UNESCO’s Four Pillars of Education, integrating themes of social welfare, citizenship, animal welfare, and environmental stewardship.

CFL Education for Children provides a distinctive exploration of humane education. ACTAsia’s innovative method educates students on the importance of compassion and respect for people, animals, and the environment. Similar to the vision of One Voice, CFL emphasizes the interconnectedness of everything in our world, underscoring the significance of One Health. Tailored for children aged 6-12 years old, this transformative experience seeks to cultivate a generation of empathetic and responsible global citizens dedicated to the well-being of all.

“Education is the way forward and that is why we support ACTAsia’s work as much as possible,” said Ms. Arnal.

Looking to the future with stamina and commitment

Ms. Arnal and her team at One Voice continue to work tirelessly on behalf of animals in France and elsewhere who are enduring unjust treatment. They continue to battle for legislation in France that protects wild animals. “We have to remain focused on our in-depth work,” said Ms. Arnal. “What keeps me going is that the animals do not have anyone else. We cannot stop. We cannot feel desperate, sad, demotivated, because the animals are counting on us.”

“We are here for the animals.”

Thank you, Ms. Arnal and the One Voice team for your inspirational work and valued support!
