Our Power, Our Planet
Earth Day 2025
A global call to action, Earth Day has been mobilising over a billion people annually on Earth Day – and every day – to protect our planet. This year the theme is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ inviting everyone around the globe to unite behind renewable energy.
Earth Day is a core component of ACTAsia’s Caring for Life (CFL) education for children and this year we are promoting Biodiversity as part of the importance of ‘green education’.
This year marks ACTAsia’s FIFTH Earth Day event and every year the response from students and teachers is truly significant, as we educate the next generation about caring for their future, by looking after our planet. Earth Day is vital in demonstrating the importance of collective action for global solutions.
Teaching Biodiversity in the Classroom

What is biodiversity loss and why does it impact the planet?
Biodiversity refers to all the different kinds of life you’ll find in one area—the variety of animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms that make up our natural world. Each of these species and organisms work together in ecosystems, like an intricate web, to maintain balance and support life. Biodiversity supports everything in nature that we need to survive: food, clean water, medicine and shelter.
If we lose biodiversity – our vital life support system – then it is gone forever, impacting our daily lives now and in the future. Biodiversity affects everything from global health and food security to the economy – and our ability to tackle the climate crisis, as the United Nations explains.
Why are we witnessing biodiversity loss?
The main driver of biodiversity loss is human use of land for food production.
In the last few years, several major reports have all called for changes in the world’s food system and highlighted the need to move towards plant-based diets, in order to protect global diversity and to improve sustainability.
How will teachers explain the importance biodiversity to young children?
Educators will discuss the importance of looking after the environment and how children can truly make a difference.
ACTAsia will be providing primary and secondary school teachers with educational toolkits on the theme of biodiversity, which will allow more teachers and students to experience ACTAsia’s award-winning Caring for Life education. The toolkit will help educators deliver a range of fun and meaningful activities which promote inquiry-based learning. The goal is that children will learn that all organisms in the ‘web of life’ have unique intrinsic value, recognise that biodiversity is under threat and that ecosystems are facing degradation. The impactful lessons will encourage students and teachers to take action, to establish the concept of respect for nature and green development and most importantly to protect our vital biodiversity. This year students will have the opportunity to enter various biodiversity themed competitions, encouraging even wider participation.

ACTAsia’s teaching is in line with the United Nations and Government Strategy
By championing biodiversity, ACTAsia’s educational goals are very much at the heart of the United Nation’s Climate Change call for action. Our goals are also in line with the Convention on Biological Diversity. Signed by 150 government leaders at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the Convention on Biological Diversity is dedicated to promoting sustainable development. Both organisations understand the urgent need to protect our global biodiversity to ‘future proof’ our planet.
ACTAsia’s Earth Day programme will also help achieve the goal set by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in the China Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan (2023-2030). The objective is to make the conservation of biodiversity a citizen’s conscious action and to realise the vision of harmonious coexistence between human beings and nature.

What is Caring for Life education for children?
ACTAsia’s Caring for Life (CFL) for Children education programme aims to help Asian children, aged between 6 and 12 years old, to develop a sense of compassion and responsibility for animals, people and the environment. Taught over six years and based on UNESCO’s Four Pillars of Education, the curriculum encompasses social welfare and citizenship, animal welfare and environmental issues. The course teaches children that all living things are interdependent and that the concept of One Health only comes from caring for all.
